Citronella Essential Oil Organic – Cymbopogon nardus – is steam distilled from the leaves and stems of different species of Lemongrass which grows extensively in India and Indonesia. Our oil is certified organic to ensure the quality of this popular essential oil.
Citronella has a fresh aroma with a slight lemon/citrus scent as it is related to Lemongrass.
Citronella Essential Oil Organic is used extensively in outdoor candles to deter mosquitoes and other flying, biting insects but the benefits in this application are somewhat questionable especially if the candles are not at ground level and close to you. Used in topical applications Citronella Essential Oil Organic has been found to be reasonably effective but the products using it as the active ingredient generally need to be re-applied every 40 – 60 minutes to maintain effectiveness.
At present, the world estimates annual production of citronella oil is approximately 3,800 tonnes. The main producers are China and Indonesia – producing 45 percent of the world’s supply. The oil is also produced in Taiwan, Guatemala, Honduras, Brazil, Sri Lanka, India, Argentina, Ecuador, Jamaica, Madagascar, Mexico, and South Africa.
The market for natural citronella oil has been eroded by chemicals synthesised from turpentine derived from conifers which many feel are more effective. However, natural citronella oil and its derivatives are still preferred by the perfume industry because of the geraniol content in the oil which gives it a nice sweet note.
Although Citronella is widely used in applications with access to the skin it should be used with caution. Store your oil in a cool place below 30C, out of the reach of children and not to be taken. If pregnant seek medical advice or from your Aromatherapist before using Citronella or products containing the oil.
Major plant chemical compounds: Citronellal, Geraniol, Citronellol. Citral (which are used in perfumery in which Citronella has been used).
