Cinnamon Bark Essential Oil – Cinnamomum zeylanicum or verum – is grown widely throughout tropical regions of the world. This immensely popular spice has been traded throughout the regions of the worked for many hundreds of years as an additive to food.
Cinnamon Bark Essential Oil is extracted by steam distillation and has been used originally for medicinal purposes in traditional medicine and by in Ayurveda, the Indian medicinal system due to its well known anti-bacterial, antifungal, antimicrobial, astringent properties.
Cinnamon oil blends well with WA Sandalwood and citrus oils like Lime if vaporised to fill a room with the spices of tropical regions from where cinnamon is grown. Also use Cinnamon Bark oil with Frankincense, marjoram, grapefruit and don’t be afraid to experiment with blends.
Try Cinnamon oil with other spices like Nutmeg, Clove, Ginger in a vaporiser to fill your home with the spicy aromas of Christmas puddings. Or use a small amount with Sweet Orange oil for a special soap or in potpourri.
It is advised to try a small drop on the skin as a test before using Cinnamon essential oil as the oil known to cause irritations and allergies. Make sure you add a few drops to your favourite carrier oil as due to the potency of cinnamon oil it could cause skin burns and reactions.
Cinnamon essential oil is very intense and because the oil has a high percentage of aldehyde, we advise you are conservative with the dose you use when applying to the skin. Doses should be very small as the oil has the possibility to cause mucous membrane irritation (Bowles,J. 2003. p82).
Store in a dry area below 30° and keep out of the reach of children. If swallowed seek medical advice immediately. Do not ingest this oil. If pregnant get advice from your medical professional before considering using.
