West Australia’s new sandalwood distillation factory was opened by the WA State Minister for Indigenous Affairs, Hon Ben Wyatt, in Kalgoorlie December 2017. The facility is a joint venture between the Dutjahn Sandalwood Company and West Australian Sandalwood Plantations. The Dutjahn Sandalwood Company comprises of Indigenous peoples of the Western Desert, based in Wiluna. Their contribution to this project is significant as the first business in the distillation of sandalwood oil that has an Indigenous ownership. The first oil has been collected, taken from trees from Indigenous owned land and plantations of the WA wheatbelt. Heritage Oils has played a significant role in the building of the operation with our senior sandalwood consultant planning and overseeing the construction. The oil will continue to be steam distilled, with volumes increasing to 3,500kgs in 2018. With this new opportunity which will benefit essential oil and perfume companies world wide, important jobs and opportunities have been created in rural WA.
